FMCSA requires designated supervisors of covered CDL drivers to receive at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and at least 60 minutes on controlled substance use.[1]
What the training is for
The purpose is to help supervisors recognize specific, contemporaneous indicators that can support a reasonable-suspicion determination. It is not simply general drug-awareness training.
Who needs it
The requirement applies to people designated to supervise drivers subject to Part 382. An owner-operator who is the employer and only employee, and who does not supervise other drivers, is not subject to the supervisor-training requirement in §382.603.[2]
